Hearts in San Francisco: Designing a Heart Sculpture for the Hero Luncheon at AT&T Park
Being selected as an artist for Hearts in San Francisco was one of the most meaningful experiences of my career a chance to create public art in service of a cause that matters deeply to the community.
Selected as a Hearts in San Francisco Artist
On February 22, 2013, I attended the Hearts and Hero Luncheon at AT&T Park in San Francisco as one of the artists chosen to design a heart sculpture for the Hearts in San Francisco public art project. Being selected for this program which features unique, locally designed heart sculptures created by artists from across the Bay Area was an incredible honor.
Hearts in San Francisco is an annual fundraiser benefiting Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center (ZSFG), supporting critical care, patient-centered programs, and health equity. Since its founding, the project has raised over $45 million for the hospital through its public exhibition and gala auction.
The 400-Pound Heart
Seeing my 400-pound heart sculpture at the luncheon was breathtaking. There is something extraordinary about seeing a work of art at that scale a piece you designed brought to life in three dimensions, standing in a room full of people who came together to support their community.
Working on a sculpture this size comes with its own challenges. The heart was too large to fit through my studio door — so I set up in my driveway, working outside under a tarp. There's something fitting about that: a piece made for the public, created in the open air. It was one of those experiences that reminds you why you became an artist.
I feel so blessed that my heart was purchased by Intel — a recognition that means a great deal to me both as an artist and as someone who believes in the mission of this fundraiser.
The Hero Awards
One of the highlights of the luncheon was witnessing the Hero Awards — given to individuals for their extraordinary work in the San Francisco community. It felt like watching CNN Heroes, but with a deeply local flavor. Seeing people recognized for their service and sacrifice was moving and grounding. It put the art — and my own work — in its proper context: in service of something larger than any single piece.
About Hearts in San Francisco
Hearts in San Francisco is one of the most beloved public art projects in the Bay Area. Each year, artists are selected to design unique heart sculptures that are displayed publicly throughout the city before being auctioned at a gala fundraiser. The program has raised over $45 million for Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital, funding critical care and health equity programs that serve the entire community.
Being part of this tradition — joining the roster of artists who have contributed their vision and craft to this cause — is something I carry with pride.
