I am deeply honored to have received the Weiss Sisters Prize at the 116th New Haven Paint and Clay Club Juried Exhibition — one of the most meaningful recognitions of my career as a painter.
Receiving the Weiss Sisters Prize
On July 7, 2017, my painting Leisure was awarded the Weiss Sisters Prize at the 116th New Haven Paint and Clay Club Juried Exhibition. The juror was Richard Klein, Director of the Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art — a distinguished voice in contemporary art whose selection made this recognition especially meaningful.
Receiving this award was both exciting and humbling. To have a work recognized by a juror of Richard Klein's caliber, at an institution with the history and prestige of the New Haven Paint and Clay Club, is something I will always carry with me.
About the Painting: Leisure
Leisure is a large-scale original painting, 36 inches x 36 inches, created in the tradition of the Bay Area Figurative style. The work was deeply influenced by Winslow Homer, particularly his intimate portraits of figures at rest — including his tender paintings of his mother. I wanted to capture that same quality of stillness and quiet presence, translated through the painterly, expressive language of the Bay Area Figurative movement.
The Bay Area Figurative style — known for its bold brushwork, rich color, and return to the human figure after Abstract Expressionism — felt like the right vehicle for this subject. Leisure is a painting about pause, about the dignity of a quiet moment, and about the way great artists like Homer found the monumental in the everyday.
About the New Haven Paint and Clay Club
The New Haven Paint and Clay Club is one of the oldest and most respected artist organizations in New England. Its annual juried exhibition brings together accomplished artists from across the region, with selections and awards made by leading figures in the contemporary art world. Being included — and recognized — in this exhibition is a distinction I am proud to hold.
About the Juror: Richard Klein
Richard Klein serves as Director of Exhibitions at the Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art in Ridgefield, Connecticut — one of the leading contemporary art museums in the United States. His expertise in contemporary painting and his commitment to rigorous, thoughtful selection made his recognition of Leisure particularly meaningful to me as an artist.
